Two deserts, geographically distant but similar to each other, hold the record for the highest temperature ever recorded on the planet’s surface.

The US Death Valley holds the record for the hottest spot in the world at 56.7 ° C, but only in terms of air. A new study has found that two deserts hold the record, at the same level as the highest temperature ever recorded on earth, that of Dasht-e Lut in Iran and that of Sonora, on the border between the United States and Mexico, where temperatures reached 80.8 ° C.

Dasht-e Lut lies between two mountain ranges, where warm air is captured and remains in the dunes, warming especially in parts covered with volcanic black rock.
